In Your Words – in Person (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone is a writer. Write and share your story with the Palmetto Literacy Council and Communal Pen, a community-writing initiative.

This fun-filled workshop will include writing, sharing, and giving affirmation to one another on our storytelling journey. No previous experience in storytelling or writing needed.

This event is free, but due to limited space, registration is required.

Road Tripping, SC – Virtual Workshop

South Carolina’s roads are rough, but the landscapes and destinations are beautiful and haunting. Share your road trip stories in this virtual writing workshop. No writing experience is required, just stories.

Dawn Dawson-House, Executive Director of the WeGoja Foundation, will share the journey of their digital app and book project, The Green Book of South Carolina, which reimagines the historic travel guide to rediscover the cultural landmarks of South Carolina.

Folklore of South Carolina – Virtual Workshop

From the Grey Man to Bruh Rabbit, South Carolina’s folk tales offer a peak into the state’s rich heritage. Explore and share the mythical and legendary stories from your life.

Our workshop will be co-facilitated by Dr. Nancy Tolson, the assistant director of African American Studies at University of South Carolina. She is an accomplished scholar and researcher of Black folklore, as well as a renowned storyteller.

Home Remedies I – Virtual Workshop

South Carolinians are blessed with abundance in their own backyards. Grandmothers and root doctors have been making medicines from the earth for centuries. Where do you look for healing? Share the remedies and traditions from your heritage. 

Matt Kip, founder and director of Full Belly Foraging, will start the workshop by sharing his experiences in teaching about the wild food and medicines in Columbia, SC. Free registration also includes a foraging walk in Columbia on Friday, May 24, at 4:30 p.m.

Jacqueline Williams, founder of Passage Products, is a Gullah herablist and author in Georgetown, will co-facilitate the session. Registration also includes a complimentary in-person tea blending workshop on Saturday, June 1 at 12 p.m. in Georgetown, SC. (Also open to new friends!)
