About us

The Athenaeum Press is a student-driven publishing lab that focuses on discovering and documenting hidden local and regional stories that have strong ties to Horry County, South Carolina. The Press strives to foster engaged communities by providing a unique learning opportunity for students, faculty, and the public to engage and produce collaborative creative projects that involve underlying public concerns, historical events, or anything the mind can imagine. The Press believes that every story deserves its own distinctive creative format, and promises to push submitted proposals to the limit. Project submissions are brought to life by a group of interdisciplinary students and faculty at Coastal Carolina University who wish to make a difference in the community at large.

We invite the public, students, and faculty members to take the next step… Step one: submit a project proposal. Step 2: Change the world.

About the Press

The Athenaeum Press is committed to fostering healthy communities through an interdisciplinary learning environment because culture and communities matter to us.

Our role in community engagement

The Athenaeum Press aims to produce projects that have local, regional, and national interest. Its flagship project, Chasing the Paper Canoe, embodies the press’ engagement with the local culture and history in Conway, SC. The press actively seeks submissions from local and regional community members, and its production process involves close collaborations between the university and public at large.

It’s all about quality and education

The Athenaeum Press is a student-centered laboratory for document design, editing, publishing, and digital media development and dissemination. Located in the Thomas W. & Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities & Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, the educational mission of The Athenaeum Press requires that every step of each publication project—from research to writing, conception to design, production to promotion—involve and enhance student skills. The Press focuses on projects which are selected using the following factors: innovation, ability for multi-media development, growth potential, and concentration on student learning. Selected projects are brought to life by students and faculty who are a part of the humanities and fine arts department and are developed over a one- to two-year collaborative process. Final projects are executed using a variety of emerging multimedia platforms that are accompanied by traditional print publications.
