Communal Pen

In partnership with the SC Arts Commission, the Athenaeum Press is expanding the Communal Pen community writing workshops. This initiative showcases short stories to explore the dynamic and ever-changing state of South Carolina. We create space for, amplify, and connect unheard voices through writing workshops, curated publications, and a digital platform.

The Press is facilitating virtual and in-person writing workshops throughout 2023-24, and we have a survey for interested individuals to share their experiences and feedback as we expand models and publishing options for these stories.

Survey

If you are interested in writing workshops or have participated in Communal Pen, please fill out this survey to help us plan future workshops and publications.

About Communal Pen

Communal Pen was created by Laura Green and EboniRamm with the South Carolina Arts Commission. They modeled the workshop guidelines and structure after the community writing initiative, Write Around Portland, to accompany the Smithsonian’s Museums on Main Street initiative in South Carolina. Ramm and Green facilitated dozens of workshops throughout the state with over a hundred participants. Laura Green continues to facilitate these workshops, and the upcoming Spark! Places of Innovation exhibition will feature several Communal Pen workshops at its locations.

In 2023, The Athenaeum Press partnered with the SC Arts Commission to expand and digitize the Communal Pen. The Communal Pen paired with the Press’ initiative to better document the underrepresented voices within the region of South Carolina. In our view, the workshops provide a vehicle to share stories that can build community. The Press is working on the following aspects to make the work of Communal Pen, both past and present, more visible:

  1. A digital platform that will house stories shared in Communal Pen, as well as invite participants to share their own stories directly to the website.
  2. A workshop template and facilitator’s guide that can help organizations and groups develop their own workshops.
  3. A plan for a printed chapbook series, drawing on the Communal Pen stories.
  4. More storytelling workshops that feature Press topics, from the environment to food traditions (see our upcoming events).

If you’re interested in participating, please fill out our survey or contact Alli Crandell, Athenaeum Press Director.

Workshop Guidelines

The following are guidelines shared by all Communal Pen workshops (developed by EboniRamm and Laura Green):

  1. There is no right way to write. We are here to build community through writing: spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting do not matter.
  2. It is okay to write whatever we want. We will be writing freely from our experience. However, we will refrain from sharing hate speech or any language that is harmful to others.
  3. We will be respectful when we share, listen, and give feedback.
  4. We will respect confidentiality. To that end, in this virtual format, we will not take screenshots or photo snaps of the workshop without consent.
  5. We are encouraged to share our writing, but sharing is always optional and our own choice.
  6. When sharing and offering feedback, we will keep our focus on the writing.
  7. We will be free to express ourselves with no need to apologize for what we write and share. We will be free to enjoy ourselves and let go!
